Types of Membership

Life membership is reserved for active members who have volunteered time and service of 10 years or more at PVRS.

Active membership shall be for those emergency medical technicians who have completed a probationary period, and are available to serve the community on a 24-hour basis.  Active members are required to be on an assigned duty shift every sixth evening of each week, and must volunteer a minimum of 30 duty hours per month.  Duty night hours run from 6pm - 5 am Mondays thru Fridays.  Should your duty night fall on a Saturday or Sunday evening, you will actually be on duty all day that specific day --  8 am  Saturday morning until 8 am Sunday morning,  or 8 am Sunday morning until 5 am Monday morning.  Holidays during the week usually follow the normal weekday schedule of 6pm - 5 am.

Honorary membership is for those persons who have contributed unusual and outstanding contributions of time, talent, or tangible assets for the organization.

Associate membership is for persons who can donate time and special skills or knowledge while continuing to show an interest in the squad, but do not wish to qualify as active members.  These memberships are reviewed each year at the annual membership meeting  in May.

Probationary membership is a 6-12 month evaluation period for those members applying for active membership.  At the end of the first six months, they are eligible for active membership, subject to acceptance by the regular active membership at a monthly meeting.  Probationary membership may be extended for up to 12 months if needed.

Junior membership is for those persons between 16 and 18 years of age, or upon graduation from high school, whichever occurs later.  Parental permission is required, as well as evidence of maintaining at least a "C" average in all high school course studies.  Junior members are not allowed to operate any squad vehicles, respond to scenes in personally owned vehicles, nor are they authorized to utilize red/clear emergency auxiliary lights on their vehicles.

Who can Apply?

Any person of good moral character, who has not been convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor, and who exhibits an interest in the purpose of the organization shall be eligible for membership.  Once the prospective member has submitted all required membership forms, they must meet before the Board of Directors and general membership at the next regular monthly squad meeting.  The squad shall meet every 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7 pm in the evening to discuss business matters.

Certification as a Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is not required for membership, but is desirable.  Those interested persons that do not possess this certification may participate in this training during their first year of membership.  For more information on becoming an EMT, click here.
